Air source heat pumps (ASHPs) that don’t use F-gases operate on the principle of extracting heat from the ambient air and transferring it into a building to provide heating and sometimes cooling.
Here’s how they work:
Our Work Process
The ASHP contains a refrigerant, typically a hydrofluorocarbon (HFC) or a hydrocarbon, which circulates through the system. The outdoor unit of the ASHP contains a coil filled with this refrigerant.
Even in cold weather, there is heat energy present in the outdoor air. The refrigerant absorbs this heat from the outdoor air, even at low temperatures, due to the properties of the refrigerant and the operation of the system.
The compressor in the ASHP pressurises the refrigerant, which increases its temperature. This high-temperature, high-pressure refrigerant gas is then circulated to the indoor unit..
Inside the building, the refrigerant passes through a coil in the indoor unit, where it releases the absorbed heat into the indoor air. This warms up the indoor space
After releasing its heat, the refrigerant is expanded through an expansion valve, which lowers its pressure and temperature.
By continuously extracting heat from the outdoor air and transferring it indoors, ASHPs can efficiently provide heating for buildings. Additionally, some ASHPs are equipped with a reversing valve that allows them to operate in reverse during warmer months, extracting heat from indoors and releasing it outdoors to provide cooling.

FAQ's
As part of the survey we will carry out on your home, our surveyors will assess the level of insulation your home requires, as this is essential for the efficiency of your new heat pump. Furthermore, we will check the space around your home to determine whether there is enough airflow as this powers the heat pump. Likewise, we can consider whether a combination of an ASHP and solar panels will be right for your property. All this can be installed under the ECO grant scheme and will be discussed with you in more detail.
The ECO deal is a government energy efficiency scheme to help reduce carbon emissions and tackle fuel poverty. Obligated suppliers (the big energy companies) must promote measures which improve the ability of low income and vulnerable households to heat their home. This includes actions that result in heating savings such as the replacement or repair of a boiler and the installation of insulation.
Our mechanical installs will generally take between 1 and 3 days depending on the system being installed.
